How to record a drive on iPhone
Every ride has a route, a rhythm and a story. The GPS in your iPhone is more than capable of capturing all three — you just need the right settings. This guide covers how ride recording actually works, which permissions matter and how to fix the problems people run into most.
Why record a ride at all?
Recording a drive answers more than "where did I go". Over time the data unlocks three things:
- Memory. That perfect stretch of corners you found last summer — a saved route puts it back on the map in one tap.
- Measurement. How many kilometres you covered this month, and whether your pace is changing, only becomes visible with data.
- Sharing. A good ride is worth talking about, and a route with numbers attached says far more than a photo on its own.
None of it needs expensive hardware. The phone in your pocket can fix its position to within a few metres using satellites.
How your phone records a route
iPhone does not rely on a single source for location. It combines satellite systems such as GPS, GLONASS and Galileo with Wi-Fi networks, cell towers and motion sensors like the accelerometer. A ride tracking app samples your position every few seconds and joins those points into a route.
Speed is usually derived from the distance between two points divided by the time between them. That is why readings can drift briefly where signal weakens, such as in tunnels or between tall buildings. Good apps smooth this out with filtering.
Elevation comes from the barometric pressure sensor. Present on iPhone 6 and later, it measures altitude change far more precisely than satellites can, which is why total climb figures on mountain roads are usually trustworthy.
Recording a ride, step by step
The example here uses Rovia, but the logic is similar in most ride tracking apps.
- Install the app from the App Store and open it. You will be asked for location access on first launch.
- Before you set off, while the vehicle is parked, open the recording screen and press start.
- Mount your phone or put it in your pocket. Closing the app is fine — recording continues in the background.
- Leave the phone alone for the rest of the ride. You can lock the screen; recording carries on.
- When you arrive, stop safely and end the recording. Your route, distance and statistics appear immediately.
One important note: apart from starting and stopping, you should not need to touch the phone at all. You shouldn't anyway — using a phone while driving is illegal in most countries.
Location permissions explained
Location access on iOS is not a single switch. Getting the right level matters for ride recording.

There is also a Precise Location toggle. With it off, iOS hands the app an approximate position that can be off by several kilometres, which makes route drawing meaningless. Keep it on for ride recording.
You can check both under Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → the app's name.
"Always" sounds broad, and it is worth being deliberate about it. A well-designed app only uses that permission while you are actively recording and collects nothing in between. Check that the app's privacy policy states this explicitly.
Cutting down battery use
Continuous GPS costs battery and there is no way around that entirely. You can reduce it noticeably though:
- Turn the screen off. The display uses far more power than the GPS receiver. Recording continues in the background, so there is nothing to gain from leaving it on.
- Use vehicle power. The simplest fix on long rides. Most phone mounts support charging.
- Low Power Mode is fine. On iOS it reduces background refresh but does not disable location services, so recording is unaffected.
- Keep it out of direct sun. A phone baking on a mount in summer will throttle and drain faster. Position the mount in shade where you can.
Common problems and fixes
The route is drawn in broken segments
Almost always the permission is set to "While Using the App", so recording pauses when the screen locks. Switch it to "Always". Aggressive low power settings or iOS closing the background app can also cause it, so avoid force-quitting the app mid-ride.
Distance looks too short or too long
Where signal is poor the sample points thin out and the route shortens. In the other direction, GPS drift while stationary can add small phantom movements. Better apps detect pauses and compensate.
Speed doesn't match the car's dashboard
That is expected. Vehicle speedometers typically read slightly high, within a legally permitted tolerance. GPS is usually closer to true speed but is not flawless either. Never treat a GPS reading as authoritative for speed limits.
Recording starts but no points are captured
Check whether Location Services is switched off device-wide. Airplane mode can also delay the first satellite fix even though satellite reception still works. Step into open sky, wait a few seconds and try again.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an internet connection to record a ride?
No. Position comes from satellites, so route recording works offline. A connection is needed to load map tiles, back data up to the cloud and share with friends. A ride recorded out of coverage syncs once you are back online.
Does recording stop if I close the app?
Not if location permission is set to "Always" — moving the app to the background is fine. Force-quitting it from the app switcher does stop recording.
How much battery does ride recording use?
It depends on your device, signal quality and whether the screen stays on. With the screen off the drain drops noticeably. On long rides we recommend using vehicle power.
Does it work the same on a motorcycle?
Yes, the recording logic is identical. On a motorcycle it matters more to mount the phone securely and protect it from rain, and to be aware that vibration can affect the camera and some sensors.
Can other people see my recorded routes?
That depends on the app and your own choice. In Rovia your routes are private by default; sharing a ride with friends is something you opt into.
